It is named the Saltire or the Saint Andrew's Cross. In heraldic language, it may be blazoned Azure, a saltire argent. The flag of Scotland is one of the oldest flags in the world, traditionally dating back to the 9th century, and is the oldest national flag still in modern use. History According to legend, in 832 A.D. King Óengus (II) (or King Angus) led the Picts and Scots in battle against the Angles under King Aethelstan of East Anglia near modern-day Athelstaneford in East Lothian. King Angus and his men were surrounded and he prayed for deliverance. During the night Saint Andrew, who was martyred on a saltire cross, appeared to Angus and assured him of victory. On the following morning a white saltire against the background of a blue sky appeared to both sides. The Picts and Scots were heartened by this, but the Angles lost confidence and were defeated. This saltire design has been the Scottish flag ever since. Material evidence of the saltire's use dates from somewhat later. In 1385 the Parliament of Scotland decreed that Scottish soldiers should wear the saltire as a distinguishing mark. The earliest surviving Scottish flag consisting solely of the saltire dates from 1503: a white cross on a red background. By 1540 the legend of King Angus had been altered to include the vision of the crux decussata against a blue sky. Thereafter, this saltire design in its present form became the national flag of Scotland. ALBA = SCOTLAND Alba is the Scottish Gaelic, Welsh language and Irish language name for the constituent country of Scotland. It is cognate to Albey in Manx, the other Goidedlic Insular Celtic language, as well as similar words in the Brythonic Insular Celtic languages of Cornish (Alban) and Welsh (Yr Alban) also meaning Scotland. The word ultimately comes from a Celtic word referring to the whole island of Great Britain, hence the early classical name Albion. It was used by the Gaels to refer to the island as a whole until roughly the ninth or tenth centuries, when it came to be the name given to the kingdoms of the Picts and the Scots. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Fascinating facts about Copper. Copper is the only metal other than gold that has natural color. Other metals are either gray or white. All that glitters is not gold. Some may think Copper is the poor distant relative of gold, but did you know that Copper is rarer than precious gold? Pennies today contain only 2.5% Copper because the value of a coin cannot be more than the cost to make it. Copper is the standard benchmark for electrical conductivity. It conducts electrical current better than any other metal except silver. 10,000 years ago, cave dwellers used Copper axes as tools for survival. Today, surgeons save lives and precious blood by using Copper-clad scalpels. One of the Dead Sea Scrolls found in Israel is made of Copper instead of animal skins. The scroll contains clues to a still undiscovered treasure. Copper is mans oldest metal, dating back more than 10,000 years Copper cookware is regarded as the best by chefs around the world because of its advantages in high heat transfer (the highest of any material used in cooking) and uniform heating (no hot spots). Copper tubing was found in the Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt, and they were still in serviceable condition after more than 5,000 years. The Statue of Liberty is covered with more than 200,000 pounds of Copper sheeting. Copper was associated with the Greek goddess Aphrodite in mythology and alchemy, owing to its lustrous beauty and its ancient use in producing mirrors. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Home > 3 DOG TAG PENDANTS > Product Information |
